Built in the early 1960s and managed by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, Douglas State Fishing lake is located one mile north and three miles east of Baldwin City, in southern Douglas County, Kansas. 538 acres of land surround the 180 acre lake; altogether there is over a square mile of varied habitats for fish, wildlife and recreation.

Fish species in the population include bluegill, white and black crappie, largemouth bass, channel catfish, flathead catfish, carp and white amur. Fish habitats provided include brush piles, tire and rock reefs and old bridges and foundations submerged by the dam.

Two floating boat docks and fish cleaning stations are provided, and handicapped access to the fishing dock is not a problem. A privately owned marina here rents boats and carries a line of bait and snacks as well.

Wildlife around Douglas State Fishing Lake

Woodland habitat is most prevalent. Fox squirrel, gray squirrel, white-tailed deer and rabbit thrive here, and coyote, muskrat, beaver, raccoon, opossum, woodchuck and skunk are found as well. Snow geese and ducks migrate through the lake; songbirds and ruffed grouse are seen here too.

Camping at Douglas State Fishing Lake

Camping is allowed on the area and is free to the public. There are no electrical hookups or shower facilities. Three pit restrooms are available.

Visitors are reminded that all regulations pertaining to State Fishing Lakes are in effect for this area. Please drive maintained roads only and don't litter. Consult area signs for additional or seasonal rules and regulations in the area.

Open to hunting, and trapping, Douglas State Fishing Lake is a steel shot zone.
